A host of prostate treatments options are now available for men who suffer from conditions such as prostatitis, enlarged prostate and even cancer. Medicines, surgical procedures, radiation cure, complementary therapies and supplements for maintaining prostrate gland health are available to help alleviate the symptoms suffered from by patients.
In choosing prostate treatments, a patient should first discuss thoroughly with his physician the various options to understand the pros and cons of using a particular medication or therapy. For men, particularly those aged 45 and above, maintaining a healthy prostate is necessary. The escalating number of men suffering from prostate cancer, BPH and prostatitis has awakened the medical community to the need to develop treatment options to address these conditions.
For enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), the most commonly used medications are alpha blockers and finasteride or dutasteride. Terazosin, prazosin and doxazosin are alpha blockers that have been approved for use in treating BPH. For advanced cases of this condition, surgical procedures such as transurethral resection, transurethral incision and transurethral microwave thermotherapy have been made available.
For prostatitis, the first line of treatment is usually antibiotics. The most commonly used antibiotics in treating this condition is Ciprofloxacin. Alpha blockers such as tamsulosin and alfuzosin may also be used. Another popular medication for treating prostatitis is Quercetin, a bioflavonoid that helps decrease inflammation in the prostate gland. Cernilton and the immunomodulator called suplatast tosilate have also been found to be effective against prostatitis.
For prostate cancer patients, several options are available to help them manage and treat their condition. For older men and those who have other serious diseases, watchful waiting is usually the recommended option. In cases when the cancer has gone beyond Stage I, more aggressive treatment strategies are recommended such as surgery, radiation therapy, cryosurgery and chemotherapy. Hormone therapy is also sometimes used to supplement regular treatment methods, particularly in the more developed stages.
A host of prostate treatments have been developed by scientists to fit almost all levels and types of prostate gland disorders. But before choosing a treatment strategy, men should first consult with their doctors and discuss in detail the pros and cons of each of these options.
